Subject: Class of 1953 History of the Penthouse Pickers

THE PENTHOUSE PICKERS.....Class of 1951-53
In the Class of 1951-53, a group of seven Sullins girls decided to form a  band, " The Penthouse Pickers."  We think our inspiration to start this fun band came when we were juniors watching and listening to Ikky Parker,  Mary BEll and Garnet Menges play their guitars and do a little "pickin and singin" when they were seniors living in the "Penthouse" upstairs in the the senior dorm.  Thus, we launched our musical career when we became seniors as "The Penthouse Pickers" in the Fall of  1952.  Our first performance was at "The Hut" which is pictured in the "Sampler" yearbookl.
Group members and instruments played were:  Kay Eckford, Guitar; Phyllis Harris, piano; Nancy Hearne, baby rattles; Ruth Noyes, washboard; Betty Harris, banjo-uke; Mary Geissal, bongo drum; Libby Carpenter, bass fiddle,i.e., g-string gut bucket and Dora Sarandon, tambourine, comb, and kazoo and MC.
This distinguished group of characters who dressed in hillbilly gear were the first group requested to perform in venues outside campus.  We remember playing for the Rotary Club, the County Fair and Jack Trayer's Restaurant.  Our reward,  supper on the house. We did record an album and it has long since gone it's way.  We truly had a great time and we hope we helped pave the way for the future "Cotton Pickers".  If any of our members are present at the reunion, we would love to hear from them.
Our theme song set to the music of "Roll Out the Barrel" was:
We are from Sullins
We've got a hillbilly band,
Hooray for Sullins,
Everyone thinks we are grand,
We've got the talent,
Good looks and personality,
Everybody loves the Pickers,
They're the band for you and me.
Other songs performed and later recorded, I.e. Jumbalaya, Hey, Good Lookin, Our Honeymoon, and Your Cheatin' Heart.
That about covers our memories of this fun Sullins experience.  I will send pictures by mail and hope someone there remembers our very fond memories.

Professor Dewey Scarboro's eldest son David just contacted us to share his fond memories as a child of growing up and playing on the Sullins campus.  Professor Scarboro and his family left Sullins in 1970 to accept a job offer in England.  Those of us who were privileged enough to have Prof. Scarboro remember him and his classes fondly.  But it is with much sadness that I share the news that Professor Scarboro is extremely ill and not expected to be with us much longer.  If you would like to contact him or send a card, please contact Lora Lynn Jones or Judy Brady so that we can get you in contact with David or send you Prof Scarboro's address.

I purchased a Scrapbook on Ebay from a former student of Sullins. Her name is Ann Whitmore. There are a number of photos, one is labeled The Brown Bungalow, 1940-1941. Some other pictures mention classmates such as Ruby Nash, Virginia Linn, house mother Miss Guthrie, Betty Meador. Miss Whitmore is a slim, beautiful woman and I would be interested in any other information about her. She went on to further education at Queen's College in Charlotte, NC. Thank you for any help!

Sullins College gave me a wonderful educational foundation, and I left with many fond memories.  My husband, whom I met in pharmacy school at Samford University, and I plan to attend the 2014 Reunion.  We are looking forward to our second visit back to the campus since I graduated.  Hopefully, there will be others from the class of 1957 who will attend.

I was at Sullins in 1962 and '63... went to UGA for my sophomore, junior, and senior years... but have always regretted not staying at Sullins for that last year.
I was on First Reynolds with Ginger Sample, Ingrid Lagerfeldt, and Karen Darling. Ann and SooSoo were right across the hall.
So much fun! We had our suite "meditation" every afternoon, when the 4 of us suitemates  would meet in Ingrid and Karen's room to listen to music (often Joan Baez, Puff the Magic Dragon (and whoever sang that song), and then of course Christmas songs for about 3 months!) We sat on the beds, looking terribly solemn.... our doors  shut to the rest of Reynolds.... listening to the music and never uttering a word....... until Ingrid decided the time was up!!
I traveled back to Bristol twice the following year to visit Ingrid, Karen, Ann, and Soo Soo. When it was time to get back to Athens (the University of Georgia)...  I always felt like I left a part of my heart in that beautiful and very special Building.
Would love to hear from anyone at Sullins during those years: 1962/63/64.

Greetings, from Atlanta, GA!! I attended Sullins in 1960-61. I loved the Hillbilly Band and learned to play the guitar and ukulele while I was there.  One of my special memories was going to Bermuda for Spring Break... and of course, the dances!!

Class of 1965   I hope to be able to attend the April 2014 reunion in Bristol. It is a beautiful drive from Atlanta, and it would be so much fun to see the campus and Sullins graduates. I have not been to Sullins since the 1986 or 87 reunion and would love it if ladies in the mid 1960s classes would also show up.

Vera attended Sullins College sometime about 1924 to 1930. She loved the College and her time there.   any one know of her or have photo's form that time, we would love to see them.  She was my GrandMother and passed before I was born.  I am told she was a strong lovely  woman, and I think her years at Sullins help make her so.  Thank you,

My mother graduated from Sullins College around 1939.  As she described it, Sullins always sounded like a wonderful place.  And imagine my surpise when one day at the Museum of Northern Arizona, in Flagstaff where I now live, I heard a familiar southern accent.  I asked that museum volunteer where she was from; her Virginia accent was from where she attended college.  "A little school in the south that you have never heard of."  Of course I had heard of it because it was Sullins!

Here I am, one month after the reunion, still just pinching myself that I was back on campus, seeing Sullins "Susies" from my class and so many others. To those who planned this spectacular, memorable event, we can never thank you enough. I still need to sit down and write notes to those of you who made it happen, those who I didn't get to talk to enough, and those who I did spend some time with. What an unbelievable weekend! Can't wait to do it again sometime!

Hello Class of 1972!!  I sure do wish that I could attend the reunion.  My heart is still in Bristol, but I now live in Norway, IA (outside of Cedar Rapids, IA).  I'm a Nutrition Specialist Manager of the elementary school here in Norway - so I feed 360 students.  I also work part-time at Hancock Fabrics (have to keep my hobby supported - quilting).  I've been married for 30 years and have 1 grown daughter (no grandchildren).  I definitely love the Midwest!!!  I would love to hear from you!!  Have a great weekend!

Update on my father, Professor Scarboro: As the reunion approaches I thought you might all appreciate an update on my father’s position. In April last year Dad’s doctors gave him 3-6 months to live, which is why I arranged for the notice about him to go on the Messages Board. Dad remains very ill but he has obviously confounded the prognosis! His cancer has progressed only very slowly, as can happen in the elderly. He is still very much with us and I speak to him every few days, and pass on any messages. I want to thank everyone who has sent him messages for your kind words of reminiscence and support. I can’t tell you what it means to him to know that he made such a positive difference to his students at Sullins so many years ago!

Wish I could be there, but it's not possible at this time. Does anyone know what happened to Mary Kay Garnett? Tried for years to find her, but haven't been successful. She was from Oklahoma, I believe. Also, does anyone from the class of '69 know what happened to Susan Eure? I was her "little sister" and I saw in the notes that she passed away in 2000. Anyone know what happened? I remember Sullins so fondly and had wished it had been a 4-year college so I didn't have to leave!

I was part of the class of '74 but only  there for my freshman year, then transferred down to University of South Florida. Still in Florida now with my husband and son.
I do remember the times at Sullins. The Hut and discussing politics, dinner at Mr Peters home, sliding down the hill when it snowed on the trays we "borrowed" from the cafeteria. Sitting in the hallway with the other girls and talking all hours of the night. The roadtrips to that little general store that made the BEST grilled cheese and ham sandwiches. And bribing the guard with them so he would let us make a late night run. Ran into Mary Beth May a few years back, but lost contact with Agi Groff years ago. Always wondered what happen to Jill Kitabur from Thailand, when the government was overthrown, I worried about her family and hope they are okay.

Hello everyone:  I graduated in the Class of '73 and have many fond memories of Sullins: e.g. late night runs to Piedmont Market and sunbathing on the sundecks no matter how chilly it was.  I lived on 2nd Martin my first year and loved getting to know the girls a year ahead of us:  Livy Beck, Tove Graham, Bobbie Ray, Lucy McNeeley, Meg Hawley.  I lived on 5th Holston my second year with Charlotte Slaughter, Annie Hunt, Palma Bond, Libba Asher, the McMath twins and others.  We really built up our calf muscles climbing from the Humanities Center up to 5th Holston! I am still in contact with Palma and recently, with Libba.  I lost contact with Charlotte a couple of years ago.  Annie lives in Atlanta but haven't seen her in years.  Would love to hear from any of you or others!  (I heard that Tove Graham had passed away though can't verify that  . . . certainly hope not)

Hello!  I am Proff. Dewey Scarboro's daughter, Andrea.  Ii grew up on the Sullins Campus with my two older brothers, Dale and David, our mother Andrea and our dog Shiloh.  It was such a wonderful place to grow up, and such happy times we had!  I would love to be in touch with anyone who might like to contact me.  I have just posted a few photos into the photo album from 1969 ( part 2 ) from our family archive of the campus, as well as pictures of me and friends in a ballet called Copellia, on the May Day Dell.  I was also in a ballet called Peter and the Wolf ( I was the cat)!  Does anyone out there remember these?  I also used to ride, and I've posted a photo of me riding a horse called' Look-a Here' in the riding ring.  I also loved an old mare called Missy'
My brothers and I have also recently noticed with delight, that our late grandmother, Mrs. Dale, of Griffin, Ga, is on the front photo cover for 1969 ( part 2).  We can only assume that she had been watching a ballet on the May Day Dell, or possibly a May Queen Pagent?  If anyone can clarify the event, we'd be most grateful!
So is there is anyone who wishes to get in touch, I'd love to hear from you! Our family immigrated to England in 1970, and I now live and teach Kindergarten in Maidstone, Kent, UK.  I have been married to Richard for 26 years, and we have 3 children, Harry ( aged 21), Molly ( aged 20) and Ronnie ( aged 16).

OK Classes of '75 and '76, let's get our classes organized and get together again at this reunion scheduled for Sept. 23-25, 2011 in Bristol!

I've been in touch with the woman who got this started, Judy Brady Witherspoon, '70.  Sue Askew Stewart '74, is helping organizethe '74 Class.  You can reach her at  I'm willing to track down as many of the Classes of '75 and '76 as possible.  You can e-mail me at  Let me know your current name and city & state where you currently reside.

By the end of this year, I hope to have a listing of everyone in the '75 and '76 classes, with e-mail addresses and current city/state locations, and I'll blast it out to everyone in those classes.

In the meantime, you can check in here, use (there's a Sullins reunion page there as well) and I know a lot of folks are on Facebook.

I would LOVE to see everyone again.  I'm in Canton, GA, northwest of Atlanta.  If there are others in the Atlanta area from '74, '75 or '76, let me know.  Maybe we could get together this Fall somewhere in Atlanta and see who knows of other alums who may not find this site.

I went to Bristol a few years ago to see Sullins.  It looked like we had just eaten breakfast in the cafeteria.  They even still had the revolving toasters...
I still dream about the sky high coffee cake!

My sister Robin has texted me 3 times since she found this page, so I figured I better get on it.  Thank god for Facebook.  I have sent Leslie Guenther (Beahm) an email and hopefully she will get on soon.  She is still in contact with Judy Chew and a few others.  Should be fun in Bristol, 2011.

Class of 1965. America was in transition at that time. Saw the Beatles in the TV room in Reynolds dorm, Mrs. Stoner looking at all of us screaming girls.
Am in touch with Dana Shirella almost everyday. Found her on classmates. com.
Facebook would be a great way to promote this reunion.
It sounds like a fun weekend!
Just learned that my high school English teacher at Lovett School/Atlanta is Mr Adair's COUSIN!!! Is Mr A still around?
Is anyone else bringing her husband?

The April reunion was a weekend I'll cherish for years.  Thank goodness for Facebook and those with the skills to track down so many scattered sisters so we could reconnect and remember those wonderful Sullins years.  Thank you Judy Brady Witherspoon and Lora Lynn Jones (my suite mate) for all of your hard work.  Can't wait for September 2011.

I am having the BEST time reconnecting to Sullins friends! Sounds like the Class '69 had some great representation at the last reunion. I WILL NOT miss the next one! I live in Vincennes Indiana (where I grew up) and run the family construction business. We build power lines for utility companies. . so I am the only woman on the planet in this industry! Sullins prepared me well for this! Let's get a lot of our class to the reunion in September of 2011.

Thank you for taking the time to create the website.  A special hello to my friend Anne (a wonderful person), remembering our days at  Martin Hall, then Emory.

Hi there!
I also graduated from Sullins in '76 and believe we were the last class to graduate.
Have very fond memories of the drama, the horses, and the way of life in Bristol, VA from 1974 -1976. My roomate Frances, Miss Hatcher (the weekend at her farm), the road trips, mountain men, raiding the kitchen, and William-where are you?:)
I am still deeply addicted to horses - have started the University of Wisconsin -LaCrosse Equestrian Team, (we are going to Zones in Chicago the weekend of the reunion), have a small hunter/jumper farm and still live God's Country - Winona, MN
Thank you to those who have put this web-site together - it is proof of a school that did exist for those who don't believe there are colleges for women!

I graduated in 1976 and would love to hear from anyone that graduated that year as well.  Our group of friends had so much fun and I would love to reconnect after all these years.  I still live in Bristol but all my friends were from all over....from Tulsa to Titusville!! I was hoping to see some graduates from 1976 coming to the reunion.

I love this website and thank you so much to whoever took the time to put this together. It's great!
My years at Sullins were two of the best years of my entire life. I made lifelong friends there that I love dearly and actually get to see every now and then. I've been to Indiana to visit Chris Xanders and to Fort Lauderdale to visit Lissa Harrison and with Leslie Rogers living in Houston like I do, I get to see her a lot more often. I have also kept in touch with Jaine Herring too who lived across the hall from me in Reynolds. I was heartbroken when Sullins closed it's doors for good since I had wanted my daughter to attend there too and be a legacy. I will always remember Sullins as one of the great experiences I've ever had and feel fortunate to have been a student there.

I'm not able to attend the reunion and am so sorry I'll miss it. We're sort of having our own Sullins reunion right now....March Houston with Janis Billing and Leslie Rogers. We miss Xanders!!!! Some of the best years of my life were at Sullins and I am glad to have remained friends with Chris, Janis and Leslie and we do get together at least once a year........or try to. Hope everyone has a great time at the reunion.

I am Mary Ruth Ellis' daughter-in-law.  Mary Ruth passed away in 2006.  She remembered her days at Sullins very fondly, and we are hoping o discover a bit more about those memoires.  The alumni office has thoughtfully identified a copy of the 1934 annual, but we would also love to have one from her senior year--1935.  If you have one, could we borrow it and scan it?

If Mary Ruth were able, I'm sure we would have enjoyed attending the reunion and looking up her friends.  Hope it is a successful event.  Donna Bergh

We were the Centennial Class, and "oh the times they were a changin' "...  '68..white gloves, hose, and heels to go downtown and a dress or skirt at supper; blue jeans or shorts were only for picnics.  '69  tailored slacks could be worn off campus to town, jeans on more white gloves, stockings and heels required.

How many of you went to class with you jammies on under your raincoat?

I'm looking forward to all of stories that we'll share and compare at the reunion.  Bring lots of pictures of then and of your life since Sullins!
See you soon.

Some of the craziest and happiest days of my life were spent at Sullins College.  Many of my life-long friends were made at this wonderful school.

There are only a few generations left who remember Sullins.  Hope many will attend the upcoming reunion.
